Ingredients: 200g x self raising flour, 1 x egg, 3 x medium or large bananas, 150g x sugar, 75g x butter, pinch of salt, 75g x chocolate chips
Special Equipment: Mixing bowl, kitchen scales, muffin trays, paper cases, spoon, electric mixer (or you could use a spoon)
Pre-heat oven to 180C/350F/G4
Peel the bananas and mash them all with a fork
Weigh out the sugar and butter and add to the mashed bananas
Mix well then crack the egg in too
Add in the flour and 50g of the chocolate chips and combine together
Spoon into the paper cases – we made about 12 from our mix
Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips over the top of the muffins and bake for about 20-25 minutes
Remove from the oven when they turn golden brown and a knife inserted in the middle of the muffins comes out clean of mixture
Leave to one side to cool then store in a tin until ready to eat!
Get the Kids Involved: Looking out the ingredients and equipment, measuring out the ingredients into the bowl, mixing together, spooning into the paper cases, setting the timer
Kitchen Monster Tip: About 2/3rds of the way through baking, turn round the tin to ensure an even bake

Yes, you can buy Hot Cross Buns in every supermarket in the run up to Easter but where’s the fun in that? You’ll miss out on the lovely baking smells and the chance of eating one while it’s still warm! Treat yourself with our Hot Cross Buns recipe for kids. Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!
Ingredients: 480g x strong bread flour, 1 x tsp salt, 28g x dried yeast, 2 x tbsp butter, 100g x sugar, 1/2 tsp x cinnamon, 1/2 tsp x nutmeg, 1 x egg, 240ml x warm water, 220g x raisins (also 120g x plain flour and 4 x tbsp water for the cross and some honey for the glaze)
Special Equipment: Mixing bowl, kitchen scales, spoon, baking tray, cling film
Mix the warm water and the dried yeast together and pour into your bowl
Add the flour, salt, egg, butter, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and mix well until all the ingredients are combined
Transfer onto a floury work surface and knead well for about 10 minutes(!) – this is really important, if you don’t do it for long enough then you’ll end up with really solid buns
If the mixture is too sticky then add more flour
Add the raisins and knead for another couple of minutes or until they’re evenly distributed
Place back into the bowl, cover with cling film and leave for an hour in a warm place – this allows the dough to start rising
After the hour is up, give it a knead for 30 seconds then cut into 16 evenly sized pieces
Give them a roll between your hands and place onto a greased baking tray
Cover them with more cling film and leave again for about 30 minutes
Mix the plain flour with the water and pour into your plastic bag then snip the corner off so you’ve got a homemade piping bag
Draw crosses on each of the buns then bake them in a pre heated oven (220C / 200Fan / 425F / G7) for about 20 minutes, turning the baking tray round after about 15 minutes
As soon as you take them out of the oven, give them all a generous coating of honey over the top to give them a shiny, sticky glaze
Kitchen Monster Tip: We can’t emphasise the kneading stage enough – the more you knead it the lighter they will end up! Difficulty:
(only because of the amount of kneading required!)

This easy Eggy Bread recipe (sometimes called French Toast) is great for a weekend breakfast or even as a dessert. Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when the kids are cooking!
Ingredients: 1 x egg and 2 x slices bread per person
Equipment: frying pan, bowl, a slice or something to flip the toast
Heat up a little oil in the frying pan
Break the eggs into the bowl and beat them together
Place a slice of the bread into the eggy mixture and allow to soak in for a few seconds, turn it over until the bread is soaked – don’t leave it too long or all the mixture will be all gone!
Transfer the bread to the pan and cook for a couple of minutes each side or until it’s golden brown – depending on the size of the frying pan you may be able to fit a couple of slices in the pan at a time
Using the slice, transfer it onto a plate – if you’re doing more then cover it with a clean dish towel to keep it warm
Repeat until you’ve used up the eggy mixture
Cut into diagonals, serve with your favourite topping and enjoy!
Kitchen Monster Tip: French toast (or Eggy Bread) can be served sweet or savoury. Try some cinnamon or a little sugar or even some chopped strawberries if you fancy it sweet. If you prefer your french toast savoury then how about some ham and a little cheese?
Get the Kids Involved: Counting out the eggs and bread, cracking the eggs into a bowl and beating them, dipping the bread into the eggy mixture, turning the cooking bread, cleaning up after!

Eggs make for a great weekend breakfast or quick midweek meal. People think poached eggs are hard but our recipe is so easy you’ll be doing it again and again. Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!
Ingredients:1 x egg, 1 x slice toast, butter or margarine
Special Equipment: Saucepan, Slotted Spoon (this is a large spoon with holes for draining the water off – don’t worry if you don’t have one, a normal spoon will do)
Fill your saucepan with water so it’s about 4cm deep
Heat the water over the hob until it’s nearly boiling
Crack your egg into a cup and then carefully pour the egg into the water
Let the pan continue to boil gently for 60 seconds then turn the heat off completely
Leave the egg sitting in the hot water for 10 minutes
While you’re waiting get your bread into the toaster and spread with butter
Remove the egg from the pan using your spoon, shake off any remaining water and place it onto your buttered toast
Serve and enjoy!
Kitchen Monster Top Tip: You can tell the water is about to boil when little bubbles begin to appear at the side of the pan

Pancakes are great at any time, but on one day of the year they are essential! Why not try and find out how Pancake Day originated? (Tip: it’s also called Shrove Tuesday) Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!
Ingredients: 125g x flour, 1 x egg, 300ml x milk, a little butter or spray oil
Special Equipment: Frying pan, large bowl
Crack the egg into a bowl and add the flour and milk
Mix well with a fork or an electric whisk until nice and smooth
With help from an adult, heat up a frying pan, and pour out enough mixture to cover the base of the pan
Wait until little bubbles form across the pancake and then flip them over until both sides are beginning to turn golden brown
Repeat the last step until the mixture runs out
Serve with lemon juice and sugar or your own favourite toppings
Kitchen Monster Top Tip: Make sure the pan is very hot and keep oiling it between pancakes to stop them from sticking (an oil spray is ideal for this)
