New Video - Our First Month of Kids Recipes

To celebrate the end of our first month of the Kitchen Monsters website, we’ve created a short video with a selection of our favourite recipes that have been added to the website.  We hope you’ve had a go at some of them and look forward to posting more great recipes for you in the coming months!

Cheat's Tikka Masala

Curries are one of Britain’s favourite meals and this Cheat’s Tikka Masala is a great curry recipe for kids to try.  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 1 x small onion, 2 x chicken breasts, 2 x tbsps tikka masala paste, 400g x tomato soup (1 tin), 150ml x natural yoghurt, 1 tbsp x oil
Equipment: Chopping board, knife, frying pan

Slice the onion into small pieces and add to the frying pan with the oil and cook for about 5 mins
Chop up the chicken and add to the pan, keep stirring until the chicken starts to brown
Add the tikka masala paste and the soup and stir well
Cook for another 15 mins
Add the yoghurt give it a stir and heat slowly until it mixes through
Serve with rice and naan bread and enjoy!

Kitchen Monster Tip: A jar of tikka masala paste can be bought in all the supermarkets – it’s a great purchase as it keeps for ages and can be used in loads of different recipes

15 Reasons to Bake with Your Kids

If you thought that all you got out of allowing your kids to make a mess in the kitchen was a few fairy cakes then you’d be completely wrong.  Baking and cooking can be one of the best life skills you can start teaching your children.  To show what benefits can be gained by dragging your kids into the kitchen, we’ve pulled together 15 reasons to bake with your kids. But be warned, once you’ve got them in the kitchen, it’ll be hard to get your Kitchen Monsters out of it again!

  1. Cooking introduces and encourages them to try new foods
  2. It builds their knowledge of nutrition
  3. Encourages teamwork by working with others
  4. Help with their maths by using weighing and measuring

Birthday Cake

Birthday cakes are even more special when they’re home-made and this is a great birthday cake recipe for kids to try.  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 200g x butter, 125g x caster sugar, 225g x icing sugar, 2 x eggs, 125g x self raising flour, 3 tbsp x cocoa, 2 tbsp x milk, vanilla extract
Equipment: Mixing bowl, round cake tin, candles, electric mixer

Pre-heat the oven to 160c
Grease the cake tin with a little butter, line it with grease proof paper and grease that too
Add 125g of the butter to the caster sugar and beat well
Crack one of the eggs and a little bit of the flour and mix, repeat with the second egg
Put in the remaining flour and a few drops of the vanilla extract and mix again
Pour into the cake tin and bake for 20-30 minutes or until a knife inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean
Set to one side and leave to cool
Melt the remaining 75g of butter to the cocoa and in the microwave
Add the icing sugar and mix well
Get an adult to slice the cake through the middle so you have two halves
Spoon half the icing over the middle of the cake, place the other half of cake on it and spread the remaining icing on the top
Add the candles and if you want you can grate some chocolate over the top too

Kitchen Monster Tip: If the cake is starting to brown on top before it’s cooked in the middle then loosely wrap some tin foil over the top of it

Easter Chocolate Fairy Cakes

Fairy cakes are tasty but this chocolate fairy cake recipe for kids is delicious.  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 150g x dark chocolate, 175g butter, 1 x tbsp syrup, 175g x self-raising flour, 25g x cocoa powder, 125g x soft brown sugar, 2 x eggs, 100ml x milk, 100g x icing sugar, Mini Eggs
Equipment: Paper cases, muffin style baking tray, mixing bowl, microwaveable bowl

Preheat the oven to 160C / G3
Heat 100g of the chocolate, 125g of the butter and the syrup in the microwave until melted
In the other bowl add the flour, cocoa and sugar together
Beat the eggs together with the milk and add to the cooled chocolate mixture
Add in the flour mixture and stir well
Spoon into the cases and bake for about 20 – 25 mins, remove them and leave to one side to cool
Melt the remaining chocolate then while that’s cooling, beat te remaining butter and the icing sugar together with a little milk (about 1 or 2 table spoons should be enough but see how it goes)
Add the cooled chocolate and mix well
Spoon it onto the fairy cakes and add the Mini Eggs on top to finish
Serve and enjoy!

Kitchen Monster Tip: When the cakes looked baked, slide a knife directly into the top of them, if it comes out clean, they’re ready otherwise pop them back in for another few minutes

Big Beef Burgers

Kids love burgers, so why not use this simple recipe to make the burgers with your kids?  It’s fun and you’ll know there aren’t any hidden ingredients.  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 400g x minced beef, 1 x egg, 1 x small onion (or half a normal sized onion), 4 x burger baps, lettuce and tomato, salt & pepper
Equipment: Mixing bowl, grill pan, chopping board, knife

Warm the grill to a medium high heat
Carefully chop up the onion into small pieces and place in the bowl
Add the minced beef and the egg and then using your hands squish it all together until it’s all well mixed
Divide the mixture into 4 and pat into burgers
Place on to the grill pan and underneath the grill (now wash your hands!)
Cooking time will depend on the thickness of the burgers but expect around 15 minutes, turning once half way through
While you’re waiting for the burgers, get your baps ready with some lettuce and tomato
When the burgers are cooked all the way through transfer to the baps, serve and enjoy!

Kitchen Monster Tip: Add a slice of cheese and ‘Hey Presto’ you’ve got a cheeseburger instead!

Simple Scones

This kids scone recipe is a great one for baking with children; it’s easy to get right and delicious to eat.  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 225g self raising flour, 1 x tsp baking powder, a pinch of salt, 55g x butter or margerine, 50g x caster sugar, 150ml x milk, some butter, jam or cream to serve
Equipment: Mixing bowl, sieve, large spoon, baking tray, a round cutter

Pre-heat the oven to 220c/g7
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the bowl
Add the butter and using your finger tips, mix it into the flour until it breaks up into small pieces
Add the sugar and milk and stir together until it begins to form a dough
Dust the worktop with a little flour and empty the dough onto it
Using your hands, gently form it into a ball and then press it down until it’s about 3cm thick
Use the cutter to cut out the scone shapes and transfer to the (greased) baking tray
When you can’t cut any more out press the dough together again and repeat until the dough has been used up
Bake for about 12 minutes or until they turn golden
Cut in half and serve with jam and cream!

Kitchen Monster Tip: Rub a little milk on top of each scone to make them extra golden

Whoopie Pies

These are deliciously sweet and definitely just for special occasions.  They’re also trickier than they look to get right!  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 125g x butter (or margarine), 350g x plain flour, 50g x coco powder, 1.5tsp x bicarbonate of soda, 0.5tp x salt. 250ml x natural yoghurt, 200g x sugar, 1 x egg (and for the icing 75g x butter, 550g icing sugar, 4 x table spoons milk, 1.5tsp x vanilla extract)
Special Equipment: 2 x large baking tray, electric beaters

Preheat the oven to 180C / g4
Sift the flour, bicarbinate of soda, coco and salt into a large bowl
Cream the butter, sugar and egg in a mixing bowl adding the yoghurt as you go
Add half the flour, mix well, then the rest of the flour, mixing again
Place small spoonfuls of the mixture onto the baking paper lined baking trays making sure you leave plenty of room in-between
Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until they feel firm
Leave aside for 20 mins or until completely cool
Beat the icing ingredient together until smooth and use the mixture to make the pies into sandwiches

Kitchen Monster Tip: Sieve some icing sugar over the pies once they’re ready to make them look even better!

Top Truffles

Deliciously chocolatey, these Top Truffles are great party treats.  Just make sure you make enough to go round!  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 210g x digestive biscuits, 50g x butter (or margarine), 200g x condensed milk, 2 x tablespoons hot chocolate powder, 2 x tablespoons desiccated coconut, chocolate strands or white glitter sugar to decorate
Special Equipment: Paper sweet cases

Crush the biscuits until there’s no lumps left in them
Melt the butter in the microwave and then add it to a bowl with the condensed milk
Beat the mixture with a fork until it mixes together then add the chocolate powder and coconut
Pour the crushed biscuits in and mix well until they’re nicely coated
Using a teaspoon, scoop out some of the mixture and roll it into a ball between your hands
Roll the ball in either the chocolate strands or the glitter sugar and place in a paper case
Repeat with the rest of the mixture and place them into the fridge to harden for a few hours
Serve and enjoy!

Kitchen Monsters Top Tip: Placing the biscuits into a freezer bag to crush will ensure you don’t get crumbs everywhere

Super Healthy Watercress Soup

Not only is this a great tasting, easy to make soup, it’s packed full of goodness including watercress, one of nature’s ‘Super Foods’.  It’s a delicious way to get one of your five a day.  Remember to always follow the Kitchen Monsters Code when you’re in the kitchen!

Ingredients: 1 x tbsp olive oil, 5 x cloves of garlic, 1 x bunch of spring (or salad) onions, 1 x bunch (or bag) of watercress, 1 x pear, half a tsp of ground ginger, 1 x medium sized potato, 750ml of vegetable stock
Special Equipment: Large pot, Blender

Chop the tops and bottoms of the spring onions off
Peel the skin off the garlic cloves and either crush them or chop them up
Peel the potato and chop it into quarters
Pour the oil into the pan and put in the spring onion, garlic and potato
After 5 minutes add the stock and the ginger and boil for 20 mins
Peel and chop the pear, turn off the heat and add the watercress and pear to the soup
Blend it all together until smooth
Serve and enjoy!

Kitchen Monster Tip: For an added treat and to make it look very fancy pour a swirl of cream before serving
